"FROZEN JEWS" AVROM SUTZKEVER
1. Have you seen, in fields of snow, 2. frozen Jews, row on row? 3. Blue marble forms lying, 4. not breathing, not dying. 5. Somewhere a flicker of a frozen soul - 6. glint of fish in an icy swell. 7. All brood. Speech and silence are one. 8. Night snow encases the sun. 10. A smile glows immobile 11. from a rose lip's chill. 12. Baby and mother, side by side. 13. Odd that her nipple's dried. 14. Fist, fixed in ice, of a naked old man: 15. the power's undone in his hand. 16. I've sampled death in all guises. 17. Nothing surprises. 18.Yet a frost in July in this heat - 19. a crazy assault in the street. 20. I and blue carrion, face to face. 21. Frozen Jews in a snowy space. 22. Marble shrouds my skin. 23. Words ebb. Light grows thin. 24. I'm frozen, I'm rooted in place like the naked 25. old man enfeebled by ice. |
